ALBUQUERQUE, NM – Migratory birds like the sandhill crane make New Mexico their winter home and the ABQ BioPark will be celebrating these birds at Saturday’s International Migratory Bird Day.

The event takes place from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. on May 20 at the Botanic Garden.
“We have a lot of fun and educational activities lined up,” said Cheri Vogel, ABQ BioPark curator of education. “We invite people to come out to learn more about migratory birds and just how they survive such incredible migratory journeys that span extraordinary distances.”
Attendees can participate in a variety of hands-on activities including a “bird walk” for kids. There will also be discovery stations with birding information, crafts and information about feeding the BioPark’s ducks.
The BioPark also will welcome representatives from Central NM Audubon Society, Rio Grande Nature Center, Friends of Valle del Oro and the US Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS). These organizations will highlight urban efforts to save the birds, great birding spots and how the Migratory Bird Treaty is holding up.

The event is celebrated internationally. This year’s event theme is “helping birds along the way.” Visitors will learn about “stopover sites” – locations where migrating birds stop to acquire the energy-rich fat stores needed to fly thousands of kilometers across continents and oceans.  More information about the international celebration can be found here.
