Annual ABQ Jewish Film Fest
Jul 14 @ 7:00 pm – Jul 28 @ 10:00 pm

6th Annual ABQ Jewish Film Festival. Celebrate the Jewish Experience Through Cinema

Six acclaimed films— all ABQ premieres — from the US, Israel, Mexico and Poland

The JCC’s 6th Annual ABQ Jewish Film Fest in Albuquerque will light up the screens during the last two weeks of July with six recently released film premieres.  Each year the Fest endeavors to weave a colorful fabric of uniquely Jewish stories that come to us through movies from around the world.  The Fest curators research current films showing at film fests worldwide to select a representative line-up of the finest films for Albuquerque audiences to enjoy.

This year that was an arduous task because not only has the roster of Jewish films grown substantially, but the quality of the films has equally progressed. Even though the task was daunting, it was truly a labor of love, screening and reviewing documentaries, dramas, comedies and all the territory in between from Denmark, Germany, France, Hungary, Belgium, Russia, Poland, Israel, India and the U.S.  The six   selected films are representative of the best of each genre and showcase the Jewish journey around the world from past to contemporary times.

LITTLE BEAVER RIDES ON

A faded comic strip character bursts to life with an annual parade in northern New Mexico.

TROY VICENTI SAYS HE BECAME the chosen one not long after birth. Fred Harman, who was famous for his Red Ryder comic strip, lived on a Colorado ranch not far from the Vicentis’ home in Dulce, a little town that lies a bit west of Chama and serves as the tribal headquarters of the Jicarilla Apache Reservation. Vicenti’s family and their neighbors were friends with Harman and visited him regularly. “I was still wrapped in a cloth and everything, and my mother took me up to his ranch,” Vicenti says. “And he told her: ‘This boy is going to be Little Beaver.’”

“Even as Red Ryder faded from the national consciousness, the Jicarilla Apache tribe never forgot Vicenti’s role as Little Beaver, and the parade, which began in his honor in 1958, has continued to the present day. The event now includes a rodeo, a powwow, races, competitions, and live music. In 2017, many of the elaborate parade floats featured horse-related scenes for the year’s theme, Honoring the Horse. Little Beaver’s likeness grinned from the sides of pickup trucks, banners, and horse trailers. Native celebrities, especially tribal beauty queens, punctuated the scene. There was Miss Jicarilla Apache, Miss Junior Jicarilla Apache, even little Miss Head Start. And finally, there was 2017’s Little Beaver himself, a boy no more than seven, smiling shyly and waving to his cheering fans.”

Las Vegas Rough Rider Motorcycle Rally
Jul 27 – Jul 29 all-day

Rough Rider Motorcycle Rally (July 27–July 29): Inspired by Theodore Roosevelt and his Rough Riders, and their reunion held in 1899 in Las Vegas, this annual gathering of motorcycle riders from all over the country honors that camaraderie and sense of honor. There are lots of iron horses, interesting characters, three days of live music, a motorcycle rodeo, a bike show, and competitions.

About Us

Welcome to the 13th Annual Rough Rider Motorcycle Rally in Las Vegas, New Mexico. Always held on the last full weekend of July, this Rally was started by local motorcycle riders who came together in 2005 to plan a Rally around the area’s history and special environment. The name was chosen because Rough Riders had a long tradition in Las Vegas.

Early in 1898, Theodore Roosevelt recruited the 1st Volunteer Calvary Regiment from the western territories—New Mexico wouldn’t become a state for fourteen more years. He chose to enlist these men because of his confidence in their ability to adapt, their self-sufficiency and their spirit. The regiment’s performance during the Spanish-American War proved his belief in the frontier character. The men he chose came from various backgrounds and circumstances. Even so, these men all formed strong personal ties. Led by Theodore Roosevelt, the first reunion of the regiment was held in Las Vegas in 1899. Over 600 of the original 1000 soldiers attended. During the next 70 years, Rough Rider reunions were held to honor the regiment’s military service, but especially to celebrate the camaraderie and unique personalities that defined the Rough Riders.

Teddy Roosevelt and the Rough Riders

For the past twelve years, the Rough Rider Motorcycle Rally has brought motorcyclists from all walks of life, where camaraderie, unique bikes and personalities characterize the western spirit. Las Vegas’ historic Bridge Street which enters into our expansive Plaza is the backdrop for the Rally. Shops, businesses, vendors and restaurants provide rally goers the opportunity for unique experiences. The roads radiating out of the town and wind thru amazing scenery and villages give riders of the iron horse a variety of options. Check out the schedule of events for updates. Don’t forget to support the Rally and purchase a ticket for a round trip for two, to Las Vegas, Nevada with $500 spending cash. Be part of the tradition started by Teddy Roosevelt’s Rough Riders over 100 years ago and ride in on your iron horse on the last weekend in July.
