¡Globalquerque! welcomes our 2018 Poster Artist, photographer extraordinaire Jim Holbrook! Many of you may have seen Jim at past ¡Globalquerque!s dashing from stage to stage cameras in hand. We are honored to be graced with his photo Found Bridges.

Jim’s been snapping photos since ’73 when he enrolled at UNM. After finishing post-graduate work, he moved to the San Francisco Bay Area, working as assistant photographer at the American Conservatory Theater. Missing New Mexico and its profound photographic roots, he returned here in 1983. Airline work afforded Jim ample time off, enabling him to travel as photographic assistant to his great friend and mentor, renowned photographer Anne Noggle. Their multiple, months-long travels to the Soviet Union resulted in Anne’s book A Dance With Death: Soviet Air Women of World War II.

In the mid-1990s Jim nearly gave up photography, but in 2004 the digital revolution rekindled his desire. He has resurrected old work from his days with Noggle and has created a large body of new work. Holbrook’s photographic subjects range from strikingly intimate portraits to colorful, candid street photography. He has also found a new muse: New Mexican descansos or recuerdos. Look for his upcoming book of these roadside memorials that mark the location of highway fatalities.

Jim has recently been a photographer with Humans of New Mexico, Avokado Artists and is a longtime official photographer for ¡Globalquerque!.

For this year’s poster photo Jim wanted to evoke the idea of crossing borders and building bridges. An apt idea for ¡Globalquerque!‘s mission of recognizing our similarities and celebrating our differences! In Jim’s words:

“My photograph, Found Bridges, is a reflection of the universal connections music makes, and its importance in a time when real and rhetorical walls threaten to divide us. A lone musician strides unchallenged, bringing culture and music, like water, over this parched divide. Music, like bridges, bring us together.”

When Nature Calls

September 22nd – October 13th

Beautify, Unify & Showcase!

West Downtown, Downtown, EDo, South Broadway, Barelas, Wells Park, Nob Hill, International District, Indian Acres and @Midtown

This year’s theme When Nature Calls brings focus to Planet Earth’s climate crisis and how it is effecting all life on this floating rock we call home.  From California being on fire to Houston, Puerto Rico & Hawaii drowning in water and lava to New Mexico facing one of the worst droughts in history – we felt a need to bring our world community together through murals, music and culinary arts to highlight solutions we can all play a part in moving forward.

Beautify

We aim to build off of last years success and good vibes where we had 45 muralists on 12 locations throughout Downtown, EDo and Wells Park.  This year we plan to bridge the Central Corridor, blessing our city with positive pieces of art, celebrating Mother Earth and all she provides.

Sustainability, global warming, water protectors, farm-to-table, healthy eating habits and the strength of community to turn crisis into opportunity will be among the themes being painted in this year’s festival.

Unify

We are bringing artists, non-profits, local businesses, neighborhood associations & main streets, The City of Albuquerque and You together to celebrate our culture and the path to a safer, more sustainable future.

Mural Fest 2018 calendar dates align with the Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta. We will be offering the million visitors to our city with exciting adventures in art, music and cuisine spurring economic growth for local businesses and our artist community.

Mural Fest is a catylist in the development of a more unified, safer, beautiful city. We go about this in several different ways:

• Offering a Festival Pass which has over 100+ businesses along the Central Corridor with free, cool stuff and discounts on goods and services. We want to drive as much traffic as possible to these struggling merchants suffering from the construction of the Albuquerque Rapid Transit project.

• The launching of The Hub ABQ: city guide, magazine, event calendar and on-line shop (August 2018). This is our love affair with The Land of Enchantment showcasing everything we do great! Offering marketing, design and consulting services to local businesses, non-profits and creators throughout New Mexico.

• Turn Albuquerque into an International Arts District for three weeks every year. We aim to keep the million visitors from Balloon Fiesta to stay in Albuquerque as well as attract art lovers from around the world. This will not only boost local, national and International tourism, but plant seeds of empowerment & pride in our local art scene.

• Form a non-profit alliance coalition: Mural Fest will offer non-profit organizations a space to share their mission online, in print and at several events throughout the festival along with year-round representation on The Hub ABQ. In doing so we want to plant seeds of communication and action steps that every organization can make to form greater partnerships with other civic-minded individuals and organizations.

• A marketing & promotional avenue for neighborhood associations, main streets, The City of Albuquerque, non-profits and our artist community. Mural Fest & The Hub ABQ are champions of our neighborhoods and their common mission moving forward as a safer, more economicly viable, inspiring place to raise a family. It has been proven that more foot traffic decreases crime and that murals squash vandalism while raising community pride and tourism.

Showcase

For twenty two days we aim to turn Albuquerque into an International Arts District, featuring some of the worlds most renowned muralists along side New Mexico’s best. There will also be community walls where emerging artists, youth and the entire family will have the opportunity to create a piece together.

We are coordinating with local businesses and non-profits to offer dozens of art, music and culinary events throughout the festival. There will be a full calendar paired with the Festival Pass giving participants free entry and discounted deals to over 100 restaurants and local shops.

There will also be a film being shot throughout the festival interviewing people of all walks of life on their views of what they love about our city and how we can improve it. Mural Fest is the foundation in which artists, non-profits and local businesses can roll their carts to, plant their seeds and dream up a brighter future for all citizens of our great city!

The problems we face as a city might be bigger than you, they might be bigger than me, but they are not bigger than you and me! Can you dig it?

Celebrate Mural Fest right with the 2018 Festival Pass!

Featuring Albuquerque’s best restaurants, bars and shops.

Discounts to Your Favorite Shops,

The pass is a mere $100 with a value of over $300 of cool free swag!

Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta

The Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta is a world-renowned attraction and destination for kids of all ages. For more than four decades, the first week in October brings the smell of roasting chiles and the beautiful, magical moving picture show of hot air balloons sailing silently through the crisp fall air.

From its modest beginnings in 1972 with 13 balloons launching from a shopping mall parking lot, the Balloon Fiesta has grown to multiple events launching year-round at the custom-designed, 365-acre Balloon Fiesta Park. Our signature event remains Balloon Fiesta—which, with over 600 balloons, is the largest ballooning event on earth, the most photographed event on earth, and the largest annual international event held in the United States.

Imagine 54 football fields, all put together. That’s the size of Balloon Fiesta Park’s 78-acre launch field! And at this Park’s “playing field,” there are no losing teams and no viewing stands. Guests walk the field and are part of the action.

Hundreds of thousands of smiling, upturned faces, awestruck by the spectacular beauty of hot air balloons filling the big blue New Mexico sky. What you can’t hear until you walk our field at nightfall is the thrilling roar of hundreds of burners simultaneously igniting, turning the Park into a huge lighted Christmas tree of colorful balloons. What you can’t feel until you join us is the massive joy everywhere around you.

Balloon Fiesta Park is located north of Alameda Boulevard, one mile west of I-25.

About Us

Mission Statement
The Downtown Growers’ Market’s mission is to support and promote local agriculture, small business development and community engagement in order to better the economics, health, wellbeing and education of New Mexico residents and visitors. We’re located in historic Robinson ParkThe Downtown Growers’ Market is run by the DowntownABQ Main Street Initiative. The Market began in 1996, and continues to grow exponentially thanks to our vibrant community. The market is home to over 60 New Mexican growers offering the highest quality produce available in Albuquerque, along with a wide array of talented local artists and a delicious mix of prepared food artisans.

Every week we feature a live band, yoga at 8:45am, community nonprofits, a bike valet service, and lots of community spirit! All are welcome! We accept EBT/SNAP funds {which we’ll double for you!}, that can be processed at our Information Booth, as well as WIC and Senior checks. Also, if you forgot cash- we got you covered! Visit the Info Booth on the east end of the park to learn how you can use your debit card to acquire market tokens.

Green Initiatives

We’re SOLAR POWERED. Positive Energy Solar provides electricity for our band and Java Joe’s espresso machine.

BIKE to the market! Our neighbors at the Raynold’s Neighborhood Association provide a Bike Valet Service every Saturday starting May 5th. Bike to the market, leave your bike with them, and enjoy a stroll!

We have compost and recycling at Market in an effort to produce no waste. We are looking for volunteers to help with this program. If you are interested, please contact us below.
