The Albuquerque/UNM Jazz Festival & New Mexico Jazz Workshop present Albuquerque Jazz Orchestra featuring trumpeter Michael Rodriguez and UNM Jazz Band I featuring saxophonist Joel Frahm. The Albuquerque/UNM Jazz Festival is a 2 day event for Mid School and High School musicians from across New Mexico. It culminates in a Saturday evening concert that features the Albuquerque Jazz Orchestra, UNM Jazz Band I and the festival’s guest clinicians.

Performing with the Albuquerque Jazz Orchestra is Grammy-nominated trumpeter/composer Michael Rodriguez. Originally from Queens, New York, Michael was inspired to pursue music as a career by his father, Roberto Rodriguez, who is a drummer. Michael studied at the New World School of the Arts in Miami, Florida and continued his studies at the University of Miami. After completing two years at the University of Miami, he transfered to the New School University in New York where he received his B.A. Michael is currently a faculty member at the New York University Jazz Department. He has performed and toured with Clark Terry, Bobby Watson, Quincy Jones, Joe Lovano, Toshiko Akiyoshi Orchestra, pop icon Jessica Simpson, Chico O’farill Orchestra, Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra, Lincoln Center Afro-Latin Jazz Orchestra and is a member of Charlie Haden’s Liberation Music Orchestra.

oining UNM’s Jazz Band I, saxophonist, Joel Frahm, has been active in the Northeast and beyond for over two decades where he has formed associations and performed with jazz greats Kenny Barron, Rufus Reid, Victor Lewis, Larry Goldings, Betty Carter, Dewey Redman, Lee Konitz, Pat Martino, and the famed The Village Vanguard Jazz Orchestra. A graduate of Manhattan School of Music, Joel has enjoyed critical acclaim for his duet recordings and performances with pianist Brad Mehldau.

Founded in 1982 by Pancho Romero, the 19-member Albuquerque Jazz Orchestra (AJO) has been delighting audiences throughout the Southwest for more than thirty years. For many years under the leadership of trombonist John Sanks, the band has had the opportunity to perform with an impressive list of guest artists, including Pete Christlieb, Jim Pugh, Scott Wendholt, John Fedchock, Wayne Bergeron, Butch Miles and jazz trumpet legend and Albuquerque native Bobby Shew, who served as the Musical Director of AJO from 2007 to 2010. The AJO was honored to be a part of the New Mexico Jazz Festival, performing the music of Toshiko Akyioshi with Ms. Akyioshi conducting and Lew Tabackin as featured soloist. The personnel in the AJO features professional and semi-professional musicians, many of whom are public school and university educators: Glenn Kostur, Aaron Lovato, Lee Taylor, Diantha Swoboda, Paul Blakey, woodwinds; Derek Warren, Brad Dubbs, Henry Estrada, Kent Erickson, Bruce Dalby, trumpets; John Sanks, Ben Finberg, Chris Buckholz, Bill Austell, trombones; Jim Ahrend, piano; Michael Anthony, guitar; Colin Deuble, bass; and Andy Poling, drums.
