Music, Food, Games and More than Pie in Pie Town, NM USA
Pie Town, NM US — The 39th Annual Pie Town Pie Festival kicks off on Friday this year,
the day before the main event, with a fundraiser dinner. This year, the goal is to raise
enough money to purchase new playground equipment for the kids of Pie Town.
Kids of all ages will have even more fun on Saturday, September 14th with the annual
Pie Baking contest, the Pi-Fun Run, kid and adult games, pie eating contests, the Horned
Toad Race (yes, you have to catch your entry), live music, a health fair, vendors, and
even more. The day is packed with old time fun for those who come to the historic town
of Pie Town, New Mexico on Highway 60, not far from the Very Large Array. Rules for
the Pie Baking Contest can be found online at piefestival.org, along with schedules, and
vendor signup. In the evening, dinner will be served up along with a dance under the
stars.
Pie Town’s Pie Festival first began as a local community gathering and has grown into a
slice of old time fun for everyone. Pie Town has been known as a haven for pies ever
since Clive Norman, a WWI vet settled in the area and started making pies. In 1924, a
red-headed Texas cowboy named Harmon L. Craig bought a half-interest in Pie Town for
“one dollar of good and lawful money and other valuable consideration.” Craig opened a
gas station and garage, and Pie Town’s fame was spread even wider when Russel Lee
arrived to document rural life in the 1940’s. Pie Town still retains much of the charm of
that era, when life was simple and the pie was a staple of every roadside cafe.
Pie Town offers free dry camping at Jackson Park, along with RV sites in Pie Town, and
nearby hotels in Datil and Quemado. Pie Town’s pie cafes will be open during the event.
The event is put on by Pie Town Rising Stars a 501(c)(3) non-profit, with proceeds from
the Pie Festival go to help support the community and pies made by locals. Come for the
pie, and stay for the stars.
