Annual ¡Cine Magnífico! Albuquerque Latino Film Festival

Instituto Cervantes is proud to present ¡Cine Magnífico! to the New Mexican community once again.

Albuquerque has positioned itself as a creative and inclusive city where our community can experience a cultural exchange and participate in the many inspiring events organized by the numerous local organizations.

¡Cine Magnífico! is one of those projects that was created to further encourage cultural interactions and awareness through the lens of Latin America and Spanish´s cinema

¡Cine Magnífico! has always been (but especially with today’s political and social climate) to cover the issues that exist in our own communities – to aim a light at our comunidades latinas in the US, and “endow them with visibility”. This is the magic of cinema: visibility – the truest sense of cinematic and visual arts. Our own lives – our shared joys and concerns – shine through the screen, along with elegant music scores, true characters, stunning settings, gorgeous costumes, and well-told stories.

We showcase a diverse set of films, from award-winning to local and up-and-coming filmmakers. This years’ screenings will take place at the National Hispanic Cultural Center, the Kimo Theater and the Guild Cinema.

Thank you for supporting ¡Cine Magnífico! Enjoy the show!

Cutbow Coffee Named Among Top 50 Coffee Shops in the World

Cutbow Coffee has been named among the TOP 50 COFFEE SHOPS IN THE WORLD by international travel site, Big 7 Travel. Founded in 2017, Cutbow joined the burgeoning scene of local coffee roasters bringing world class coffee to the Albuquerque area. Owner/Coffee Roaster and Albuquerque native Paul Gallegos is a 30 year veteran of the specialty coffee industry, having roasted over 70 million pounds of craft coffee. Paul utilizes a time-honored artisanal approach to the dark art, relying on his senses to determine crucial details of the roasting process with precise accuracy. The Cutbow team of talented baristas prepare consistently delicious specialty drinks with equal aplomb.

The consistency of Paul’s roasts is monitored through the industry standard known as coffee cupping. In this practice, a small amount of coffee is ground and brewed in 6 oz. tasting glasses. The liquor is then loudly and forcefully slurped off a cupping spoon to aerate the coffee over the entire palate at once, allowing retro-nasal senses to inform the overall taste experience. In this manner, critical details of time and temperature can be identified and if necessary, adjusted in successive roast batches. Additionally, tasting notes are taken to share with customers the vast array of flavor profiles available in the world of coffee.

Hatch Valley Chile Festival

Hatch Valley Chile Festival

“Celebrate the Future” Day
In 2006, we began “Celebrate the Future” day in honor of Spaceport America. Science, engineering and aeronautic organizations present demonstrations and displays to educate our citizens on the impact and employment possibilities of the Southwest Regional Spaceport.

Pick a direction… Any direction…
The surrounding areas hold your next adventure. With New Mexico State Parks in every direction, you can rock hunt, boat, bike, hike or ski. With Leasburg State Park and Fort Seldon to the south and Caballo Lake State Park, Percha Dam State Park and Elephant Butte Lake State Park to the north, outdoor enthusiasts are sure to find the perfect opportunity for their recreation! Click here to get directions!

Hatch Business
Located off Interstate 25, between Las Cruces and Truth or Consequences, the Village of Hatch has experienced steady but moderate growth. In 2007, the town population registered a little over 1,600 people. The Village of Hatch also serves seven unincorporated communities with a combined population of 5,000 people.

With four banks, two grocery stores, a pharmacy, a few retail stores, and a smattering of restaurants, Hatch offers all the amenities of small-town life. The Ben Archer Health Center meets the community’s healthcare needs with doctors, a dentist, an ambulance service and emergency medical technicians. Our local Municipal Airport was awarded the “most improved small community airport” and continues to improve.

The opening of Spaceport America, the world’s first purpose-built commercial spaceport, brings the exciting frontier of commercial space travel to our backyard. The entrance to Spaceport America is only nine miles south from the Village of Hatch, which makes us the “New Gateway to Space.”

Hatch History
Born from an extension of the Santa Fe Railroad Company in 1880, Hatch, New Mexico, began as an adobe post office and a railroad flag station. Named after General Edward Hatch, Commander of the Southwest military, the town grew until a flood in 1921 destroyed many of the adobe buildings constructed of earth and wood.

The village rebuilt, and continues to prosper as an agricultural community to this day. The advent of the nearby Spaceport America, the nation’s first purpose-built commercial spaceport, promises an exciting new chapter in the history of Hatch.

The Annual Burning of Zozobra

What Is Zozobra?
Zozobra is a unique cultural event staged each year by the Kiwanis Club of Santa Fe as a fiery and exciting kick-off to the annual Fiestas de Santa Fe. The ‘Burning of Will Shuster’s Zozobra’ is presented annually the Friday of Labor Day weekend.
Friday evening at dusk the people of Santa Fe, friends new and old, all make their way to Fort Marcy Park where the Zozobra pageant takes place. Located just a few blocks from the historic Santa Fe Plaza. Zozobra, also known as Old Man Gloom (OMG) (pictured left), is the inspiration of artist Will Shuster and was introduced as part of the Fiesta events in 1926.
Shuster’s creation first appeared as a six-foot puppet and has since grown to about 50 feet. Made of muslin and stuffed with shredded paper Zozobra is an eerie, groaning, flailing character who appears to be part ghost and part monster.
Amid fireworks and the ceremonial dances of ghosts and fire a growling Zozobra is set ablaze and it is said as the fire consumes the beast so go the feelings of gloom and doom from the past year. The flames renewing the hope and optimism of the gathered celebrants. The ever increasing desperation of the howling Zozobra can be heard echoing throughout Santa Fe.

The Kiwanis Club of Santa Fe became officially involved with Zozobra in 1963 when Zozobra’s creator artist Will Shuster assigned all rights on June 19, 1964 to the Santa Fe Kiwanis Club. To this day they retain all the exclusive copyrights and trademarks to the figure. As the major annual fundraiser Zozobra has become a fun way for the citizens of Santa Fe (and visitors from around the globe) to participate in community service.
