Dia de los Muertos Celebration at South Broadway is a long tradition considered to be a cultural treasure by those in the surrounding community. The annual celebration brings a large number of people to celebrate the Day of the Dead, connected to the Catholic holiday of All Saints Day celebrated worldwide each year. The Dia de Los Muertos tradition focuses not on death, but on the lives of loved ones who have passed. Families visit grave sites where often elaborate decorations are placed.

Scheduled from 12 p.m. to 6 p.m., the Dia de Los Muertos celebration will feature both traditional and contemporary ofrendas (offerings) to honor the deceased. A community ofrenda will be created on which members of the public may place photographs of their departed loved ones. The Mexican Consulate is partnering to support the creation of special ofrendas that will result in a prize for the most creative and artistic design. The winner will be announced at 1:50 p.m.

The celebration will take place throughout the South Broadway Cultural Center and South Broadway Library. In the large community room will be the “Dead Market,” an artists’ market with themed art, jewelry and objects celebrating Dia de Los Muertos. In the Library additional art and a “Dead Poets Ofrenda” will be on display.

Many of those attending will add to the celebration with elaborate Dia makeup and costumes.

Car enthusiasts will enjoy “Show ‘n Shine,” where all are welcome to display their low riders, classic, traditional or Volkswagen cars.

Food Trucks offering both traditional Mexican fare and typical American food like hamburgers and hot dogs will be onsite.

Admission is free.
